What is a pool pump? It's the only thing that makes the movement of water in pipes and circulates the pool water.
Basically, the pool pump circulates the water in the pool. The water passes through a small basket (to remove the debris) before it reaches the actual pump turning. Water is pumped by really have to spin at high speed rotor. Water is pumped. Sounds easy enough? Maybe you could build one on your own? Ja, I would suggest. This is a simplistic explanation.
Consider the difference between the pump and motor. The pump is very hard plastic which makes the movement of water, the engine that makes it work. Engines can go wrong and can be anything wrong with the pump. I saw an engine with which someone had left a nest to grow and grow and really began to enter a part of the engine (electric power). Finally, it was very hot and the ants can get close enough and the engine ran (an electrical device, remember) and the engine caught fire.
The moral of the story is: stop debris away from your engine. There is another story of a man who has been spraying WD-40 into your engine when it was running. Not no more. There are limits to what WD-40 is correct.
What kind of pump you need for your pool? Well, will have a power that corresponds with the size of your pool. You do not have the power to pump low, because then it does not circulate enough water to keep your pool clean.

In addition, some energy-efficient pumps are quieter than their less efficient counterparts. Do yourself a favor and collect the efficient version. If you are looking for a replacement for your pump stops working, I recommend you request a replacement online. Just make sure that the same that it already has.
This sums up most of the pool pumps. Your local pool builder probably tastes and preferences in the pool pumps, but now at least must be able to talk intelligently with him.
