Pet Dog Clicker

It was the day after we brought it home I discovered that Sadie was a fear piddle. Had about six months old and house-broken, and I was glad to see her, and no less angry with her.

When I walked in the door, Sadie started doing the happy dance. I leaned over to stroke his neck, as I have done with all I've had dogs, and let loose its contents from the bladder into the carpet.

Piddling afraid of the dog is not unusual, and there are several things you can do to avoided. The important thing is to know that is a sign of submission to a more powerful creature.

  1. Do not punish the dog for piddling fear. It simply increases the fear and makes behavior more likely to happen. In fact, if I do not want to be scared when you come home, not punishing him for anything he has done in his absence. If you chew your favorite shoes, hit himself with it to get to where I could get to him (just to chew, because he wants to be near your smell).
  2. When you get home after an absence, you can take the dog out to the pet her or give a cordial and calm, but walk beside her until she has calmed down. Let her go outside and do his business before receiving it.
  3. Although Sadie was more afraid of me than my husband, some dogs are more likely to pee around men. Speak softly around the dog until you get used to the tone of his voice, and remember to avoid the kind of posture that seems to threaten with a dog.
  4. If stands on a dog and go to the pet dog that looks like an attack position. It is best to sidle up next to a nervous dog and gently rub her back. Even a firm look in the eye can scare a timid dog or challenge an aggressive dog. You could also squat at the level of the dog and let it come to you. Pet carefully and then walk away.
  5. I've learned that when I said "Come here, Sadie," she came all the way piddling. I had to change the words I use to call her. Now I say: "Hi, Sadie," when I want to come, and come without fear. So keep in mind that if a verbal signal seems to cause fear, you can use a different – what makes sense for you – to escape the bad associations.

We have had Sadie for over four years, and most of these behaviors fear disappeared. I still have to do the things I do that might seem to threaten her, but she is a friendly and loving dog, even with our 4 years of active grandson.

JV Bear trained her first dog when she was 8 years old by the “demonstration method,” which she made up (and recommends only if you’re 8 and spend hours a day with nothing to do but hang out with the dog). She has owned at least one dog, usually two, throughout her adult life and recommends clicker training from her own experience.
